Car Care Tips

Brake Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

Brakes are the most important safety system on your car, and they tend to warn you well before they fail completely. Learning to read those warnings can keep you safe and save you money, because a worn pad caught early is far cheaper than the damage it causes if ignored.

Squealing or squeaking

A high pitched squeal when you brake is often the wear indicator on the pads doing its job. It is a built in reminder that the pads are getting thin and need replacing soon.

Grinding

A harsh grinding noise usually means the pads have worn right down and metal is contacting the disc. This damages the discs quickly, so what might have been a simple pad change can become a pad and disc job. Do not leave it.

A soft or spongy pedal

If the pedal sinks further than usual or feels soft, you could have air or moisture in the brake fluid, or a leak in the system. Either way the car is not stopping as well as it should and needs checking without delay.

Pulling to one side

If the car veers left or right under braking, one side may be gripping more than the other, often a sticking caliper or uneven wear. Besides being unsafe, it wears your tyres unevenly too.

Vibration through the pedal

A pulsing or juddering through the brake pedal or steering wheel when you slow down often points to warped discs. It is uncomfortable and reduces braking performance.

Longer stopping distances or a warning light

If the car takes noticeably longer to stop, or a brake warning light appears, treat it as urgent. These are clear signals that something in the system needs attention now.

How long do brakes last?

There is no single answer because it depends on how and where you drive. Lots of town driving around Guildford with frequent stops wears pads faster than steady A road miles. As a guide many cars need pads every 25,000 to 40,000 miles and discs less often, but the warning signs above matter more than any number.

If anything here sounds familiar, do not wait. A quick brake check gives you peace of mind, and we only ever recommend what your car genuinely needs. See our brake repairs page for what is included, or get booked in today.
