There is nothing worse than switching on the air conditioning on a warm day and getting a weak, lukewarm breeze. The good news is that the cause is often simple. Here is what is usually going on and how to get it cold again.
It is low on refrigerant
This is the most common reason by far. Every car air conditioning system loses a small amount of refrigerant over time, often around ten percent a year, even when it is perfectly healthy. As the level drops, the air gets less cold until eventually it barely cools at all. A regas tops the system back up to the correct amount and usually brings the cold air straight back.
There is a leak
If a regas does not last, the system probably has a leak. Tiny leaks at seals, hoses or the condenser let refrigerant escape. A proper air conditioning service includes a leak check, so the fault is found rather than just topped up again and again.
A blocked or dirty cabin filter
If the air is cold but the flow is weak, a clogged pollen or cabin filter could be strangling it. Replacing the filter restores airflow and clears stale smells at the same time.
A faulty compressor or electrical fault
The compressor is the heart of the system. If it fails, or if a sensor or electrical fault stops it engaging, the air will not cool no matter how much refrigerant is in the system. This needs diagnosing properly rather than guessing.
A musty smell as well as warm air
A damp, musty smell points to bacteria build up in the system. An anti bacterial clean, often alongside a new cabin filter, freshens things up and is worth doing if the vents have started to smell.
What about newer cars?
Newer vehicles use a refrigerant called R1234yf, while older ones use R134a. The two are not interchangeable, so the right equipment matters. We handle both, so whatever you drive we can get the air con working properly again.
