Car Care Tips

What Is a Class 4 MOT and Does My Car Need One?

If you drive a car, a small van or a motorhome, the yearly test it needs is almost certainly a Class 4 MOT. It is the most common MOT class on UK roads, yet a lot of drivers are not sure what it actually checks or why it matters. Here is a clear guide.

What a Class 4 MOT is

The MOT is an annual safety and emissions test required by law. It confirms your vehicle meets the minimum standards set by the DVSA. Class 4 is the category that covers everyday vehicles, as opposed to motorcycles (Class 1 and 2) or larger goods vehicles.

Class 4 covers:

  • Cars with up to eight passenger seats
  • Small vans up to 3,000 kg
  • Motorhomes and campervans
  • Dual purpose vehicles and MPVs
  • Quad bikes and some three wheelers

When does my car need its first MOT?

Most cars need their first MOT three years after they are first registered, then once every 12 months after that. You can have the test done up to a month (minus a day) before it expires and keep the same renewal date, which is a handy way to stay ahead without losing any time.

What gets tested

A Class 4 MOT is a thorough safety inspection. The tester checks brakes, tyres and wheels, steering and suspension, lights and signals, seatbelts, the exhaust and emissions, the windscreen, wipers and washers, and the general condition of the body and structure. They do not strip the engine down, so the MOT is not the same as a service, but it does flag anything that makes the car unsafe or illegal.

Pass, fail and advisories

Results fall into a few categories. A dangerous or major defect is a fail and must be put right before you can drive the car normally again. A minor defect is a pass with a note. Advisories are early warnings about things that are wearing but not yet a failure, so you can plan ahead rather than be caught out next year.

Can I drive without a valid MOT?

No. Driving without a valid MOT can lead to a fine of up to 1,000 pounds. The only exception is driving to a pre booked MOT appointment. Booking in good time is the simplest way to stay legal and avoid the stress of a last minute test.

How much is a Class 4 MOT?

The DVSA sets a maximum Class 4 fee of 54.85 pounds. Many garages charge less, and a good garage will tell you the price up front. If your car needs work to pass, that is quoted separately and you decide before anything is done.

You can read more on our Class 4 MOT page, where you can also book your test. If your car is close to the age where the first MOT is due, or your current certificate is running low, now is a good time to get booked in.
